Tompkins Builders Receives 2007 Washington
Contractor Award For FDA Engineering and Physics Laboratory

Tompkins Builders, Inc is pleased to announce that the FDA
Engineering and Physics Laboratory project has received a 2007
Washington Contractor Merit Award for new construction. Completed by
Tompkins Builders in May, 2007, the building was recently honored
during the Annual Award banquet. Team members on the project
included the client, the Food and Drug Administration; the
architect, KlingStubbins in association with RTKL; the construction
manager, Heery-Tishman; and the owner, General Services
Administration (GSA).
The FDA Engineering and Physics Laboratory is located one mile
north of the Capital Beltway on New Hampshire Avenue, and is the
former site of the US Navy facility at the Federal Research
Center-Naval Ordnance Laboratory. Under the auspice of a larger
effort to consolidate the FDA’s myriad of programs into a single
site, this the third project Tompkins has completed for the FDA and
the second on the new campus. Technologically sophisticated, the
145,000-SF secure laboratory building consists of four levels and a
penthouse above grade and one level below grade. The structure is a
combination of steel and concrete, meeting the GSA’s Progressive
Collapse Design. Completed on time, the center incorporates
extensive specialty construction for testing and research purposes.
