Aon Build America Award Winners

Tompkins Builders, Inc. / Grunley-Walsh and the Gilbane Building Company are the honored recipients of the distinguished Aon Build America Award with Special Recognition for the National World War II Memorial project in the Federal/Heavy New category.

The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) President Jim Waltze and representatives from Aon Risk Services presented the award during the 86th Annual Convention at the Aon Build America Awards Dinner in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 17, 2005. Accepting the award on behalf of the joint venture general contractor, Tompkins/Grunley-Walsh and the construction manager, Gilbane were: Tompkins President Edward Small (Managing Partner), Joint Venture Project Executive James Walsh of Grunley-Walsh, and senior project managers: Kenneth Terry of Tompkins/ Grunley-Walsh and Lawrence P. Rebel of Gilbane. The owner’s Project Executive William B. Owenby of the American Battle and Monuments Commission and the Senior Vice President of the Gilbane Building Company, William Choquette also were in attendance. Joint Venture Managing Partner Kenneth Grunley was unable to attend.

The National World War II Memorial, located in the heart of Washington, DC, is the first national memorial dedicated to all those who served in the armed forces and merchant marine of the United States during World War II. Other prominent project team members included the architect and engineer of record, Leo A Daly and the design architect, Friedrich St. Florian.
