Tompkins Awarded FDA and CDRH Laboratory

Having successfully completed the first phase of this
construction project, FDA Consolidation, Phase 1, Tompkins Builders,
Inc. was awarded the third construction phase: Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH)
Laboratory, a new research laboratory campus for the Food and Drug
Administration at White Oak. The site, located one mile north of the
Capital Beltway on New Hampshire Avenue, is the former U.S. Navy
facility at the Federal Research Center – Naval Ordinance Laboratory
in White Oak, Maryland. Other team members include the client, the
Food and Drug Administration; the architect, Kling; the construction
manager, Heery-Tishman; and the owner, General Services
Administration (GSA). The firm fixed price contract amount is
$41,355,000.
The contract is for the construction of the Phase 3 CDRH LAB
Building. The contract includes, but is not limited to: site work,
excavation, structural, shell and core construction, interior
partitions, acoustical ceilings, interior glazing, carpeting, wall
coverings and finishes, millwork, and so forth. To summarize, the
scope of the work includes: (1) structure, shell and core
construction, (2) associated interior work including interior
partitions, acoustical ceilings, interior glazing, carpeting, wall
coverings and finishes, millwork, etc., (3) associated mechanical,
electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, and (4) interior construction of
the associated tunnels and connecting bridges.
Construction for this project is 730 days (a 24-month project)
and is expected to start on or about February 1, 2005, with a
completion date of February 2007. Tompkins was also previously award
the FDA Consolidation, Phase 1, CDER Laboratory project, which was
completed in October 2003 and the Harvey W. Wiley Federal Building
(Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Consolidation Center) project
completed in October of 2001.
